Whistralia day

Today marks the aftermath of Australia day in Whistler and boy was it a big one. Saturday night Ainsley arrived so we didn't get to go out to listen to the top 100 but it was for sure made up for the following day. Regretfully didn't make it up the mountain during the day but we got ains sorted with her tickets, rentals and some groceries.

Started drinking extremely early in my books and day drinking makes for some fun times indeed. At about 3 pals started rolling in with some sexy looking outfits to go along. After about 3 hours of preloading we headed down to longhorns to wait in a not so appealing cue. Such an odd experience cueing for an overly packed bar at 7pm. Was a super fun and long night- one of the better Australia days I have had. It still amazes me just how many Aussies flock to Whistler and even greater to see friends from other parts of the world celebrating with us.

   going to miss you brentos

roomie love

As much as I am loving being here, Australia Day for sure reminded me of some things that I truly miss.

1. Sunshine
2. Our beautiful beaches
3. Meat pies
4. Cheese and bacon roles
5. BBQ
6. Aussie beer
7. Wearing my havianas absolutely everywhere
8.The bay run
9. Swimming
10. Having somewhat of a tan

I hope you all lovely people celebrated Aussie day with a bang. Would love to hear what you all did wherever you are in the world :) Oh and if you wanna check out this article that made the front page on sydney morning herald then that speaks for itself about Australia day in Whistler

let it burn

so whilst sitting for days contemplating about what on earth to post this week (I swear blog time comes way too fast) I am staring out at my gorgeous view from my home away from home. What an awesome place to live and I sometimes need to remind myself of that, when I am having a rather unflattering day.

anyway on to more pressing topics of this week's events, I will start by mentioning the epic dump of fresh pow we had last weekend. Of course it had to come on a saturday and the lines to get in any of that action was enough for me to throw my hands up and wait until after the weekend. Yes I did get criticised to no end but who wants to wait in 40min lines to get up a chair lift with a billion layers, heavy skis and not-so-comfty ski boots?

So when I did finally get my lazy self up for a day of skiing, wow did I have a fantastic day. Went up with some of my buddies Claire, Liam, Matt, Matty and Mark over to Harmony and Symphony. I think some of us smashed close to 8 runs of harmony and not just the pretty groomed runs. I managed to get myself down the little whistler (part of the bowl at harmony) which was hard work but so much fun. Was such a beautifully clear day and we really did find some great snow. By that afternoon my entire body was burning and aching just in time for another kegger night with the fairmont gang.

I trekked it out again the following day on the best bluebird day I have seen yet! Oh and let me tell you, it was crazy warm up top with a whopping 6 degrees it seemed more like spring riding. Did a few runs and had some embarrassing trouble with my skis. Let's just say I had to hike it back up to put one of them back on and then throwing in the towel to a pair of very appreciative legs. That night followed with farewelling one of my first friends made in canadian town Brent who sadly has to venture back home early. Twas a messy night at garfs which followed with some horrible hangovers by some members of 403.

Today also marks 1 week until ainseeee gets here..words cannot describe how excited I am!

It's been a super fun week and really loving every minute that I get to spend here. If you want to stop seeing all my posts and see it if for yourself then shoot The Working Holiday Club an email at jake@theworkingholidayclub.com

the joys of living out of home

Besides the fact that yes I am living in an amazingly gorgeous corner of the globe where it's work and play on repeat every day, there are still home hitting realities that come with it. For whoever has moved out of home my hat goes off to you for taking that step and dealing with all that comes with this freedom.

I want to start by saying and I have mentioned it before that I appreciate my mother and father dearest to no end for putting up with me and my madness for the last 23 or so years.

1. The matters of food

I have had to think all for myself in this department and boy has it been tough. The grocery shop is quite a painful experience when I have no idea what I should cook or need to make a meal. I now understand why mum starts compiling a list of items and meals from the beginning of the week because let me tell you walking up and down aisles aimlessly is a rookie error. Even smaller items like salt, pepper, ketchup, spices and condiments really need to be thought of early on! I have now resulted in doing a shop once every two weeks and will use a basket instead of a trolley to stop overload of unnecessary items. This basket will unfortunately have only the very basics for meals and snacks and maybe one treat with a major dollar value of 80 plus cha chings :( I have picked up some pointers from home that amazingly I have used such as buying meat in bulk and portioning it up and sticking it into our very very full freezer. Another issue with food is that we have to really think about what we are buying and any bulky items are a no no unless you want to give one of your roomies less space in the fridge that week.

2. The matters of clean clothes

So I have touched on this previously but oh wow do I cringe when its laundry time. My plastic bag I use for my dirty laundry piles up until there are no clean items left. I can safely say that I have shrunk items, run my whites with colours just to save an extra $2 only to ruin them all and even picked up a strangers undies in my pile by mistake (thanks to communal laundry sharing). Oh I even know now that liquid detergent favours powder (isnt that sad?)

3. The matters of cleaning up after yourself

Now this really is a biggy and the major topic of this week's dramas as dramatic as it can get in carefree whistler town. You walk into anyone else's identical apartment and think wow your place is so clean. Then you step into ours and its like a repetitive gasp when you would see just how horrible our place looked. Maybe I am over exaggerating but maybe I am not, I guess the determining factor was when my friends would comment on how messy it was and also the pile of recycling that grew and grew also indicated that it was time to change our ways. In such a small space there isn't room for all of your stuff to be scattered everywhere so steph and I got to work on making our home brand spankingly new. In all of my years of living I can and will ashamedly admit that I had never cleaned/scrubbed/disinfected a toilet. This all changed a few short days ago when it clearly had not been done in the whole 2 and a half months of being settled in. No more details are needed but my entire family and even friends should be proud of that milestone.

I guess what this last week has taught me is to start looking out for myself more and no more waiting for someone else to do things for me- gone are those days! But but but before I go, living out of home rocks and the good things well and truly outweigh the bad.

anyway little followers, we had a dumping of fresh pow overnight so stay tuned for some epic tales next week.

unrealistic resolutions

and a very happy new year to my loved ones from near and far, I hope you all welcomed 2014 with a bang! Cannot believe how fast last year flew. Before I tell you all about my wild adventures of the night I think it's time to reminisce about some top moments of 2013.

1. Bringing in 2013 in Waikiki Hawaii with some amazing people - an unforgettable snapshot of 6 weeks in total that we spent together
2. First day of being home from my holiday deciding that I was going back to canada no questions asked
3. Working my ass off for 8 months straight (this really is not a top moment but really took up all of my time and got me to where I am now)
4. Finally graduating from university with a jaw dropping credit in accounting
5. Getting the "oh hey you got a job in whistler" email
6. Booking my flights
5. Being present and celebrating one of my besties 21sts
and finally number 6.. jumping on an aeroplane and changing the course of what could of been a pretty boring next part of my life

Ok so those moments may have been more exciting in my head and for some reason are pretty boring in hinds sight. However a boring year made for a more exciting outcome.

soooo what did I do on this hyped up night of the year? finished work an angry person at aprox 930 because a family decided to come in and spend an amazingly long time choosing some skis to rent and then deciding to pay in US$. However once that was all over we got ready to go to our friend's house party in whistler cay. An awesome house with a ridiculous amount of people packed inside made for one very interesting night. We are still unsure of the time we left only to rediscover the next day that we got a lift to another house party in the back of a van with no seats but a mattress only- that was fun! All in all a great night and defs a more memorable nye than many others. Lets just say work next day was indescribably horrible for all.

so I thought also long and hard (for about 5 mins lets be serious) of a realistic resolution that I might be able to stick to. However, I failed in even thinking of something as I never ever have even slightly attempted to stick with one for more than a day of a new year. Hence my title of this week's post.

On a more serious note I have actually got to start thinking of what my near future plans are going to entail. Do I stay for the summer season and get a house with some friends? do I go and travel with my millie or do I do something else entirely? I guess it all depends on my money situation and how long it all lasts.
sadly took 0 real goodies on nye
